Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia addressed the media at the 2025 Media Day press conference. He highlighted major changes after a disappointing previous season.

Ishbia stated the team lacked proper identity under his initial leadership. “When I bought the team, I didn’t come in and set the right identity and culture on the men’s basketball side,” he said.

The franchise made shifts in the front office, coaching staff, and roster. Phoenix traded Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets in a seven-team deal on July 6. The trade brought in Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and draft picks. This included regaining the No. 10 pick, used on Khaman Maluach from Duke.

“Just wasn’t a fit for what we’re doing going forward,” Ishbia said about Durant during an appearance on NBA Today.

Ishbia emphasized a new direction focused on youth and growth. “We have a different type of roster this year. We have an ascending roster,” he noted.

The owner pointed to past failures. “That old stuff, what we did didn’t work. Let’s let’s get it done the right way,” Ishbia explained.

Phoenix also waived Bradley Beal on July 16. This move cleared cap space and ended the superteam era.

The squad hired Jordan Ott as head coach on June 6. Ott signed a four-year contract to lead the rebuild. Brian Gregory became general manager on May 1. James Jones moved to a senior advisor role before joining the NBA league office.

Ishbia stressed alignment across the organization. “Everyone’s got to be on the same page,” he said about staff and players.

Devin Booker remains the cornerstone. The guard signed a two-year extension worth $145 million on July 9.

Ishbia praised Booker’s commitment. “Devin Booker is the franchise player. He’s one of the greatest Suns of all time,” he declared.

The roster now features young talents like Ryan Dunn and Oso Ighodaro. Phoenix drafted five players in 2025, including Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea.

Ishbia focused on four pillars: culture, community, fans, and winning. He aims for a team fans can support.

The owner expressed optimism. “You’re going to be proud of this team. You’re going to enjoy watching this team,” Ishbia promised.

Phoenix fired Mike Budenholzer on April 14. The coach lasted one season despite a five-year deal. Ishbia took responsibility for prior shortcomings. “I took the blame,” he admitted regarding the men’s side.

Ishbia invited alumni like Steve Nash back. Nash joins as a senior advisor.

Ishbia concluded with long-term goals. “Over the next 2 three years I think you’re going to be really proud to watch this team,” he said.
