The Phoenix Suns have brought back one of the most iconic figures in franchise history. Owner Mat Ishbia announced on X that Steve Nash is officially joining the team as a senior advisor.
“Steve Nash was an amazing player and exactly what the Phoenix Suns are all about,” Ishbia wrote. “His grit, toughness, and winning mentality have defined our organization in the past, and I’m so excited to share that Steve is formally joining the Suns as a senior advisor and will help us define our future for years to come.”
Nash, a two-time MVP, spent 10 of his 18 NBA seasons with Phoenix. He guided the Suns to multiple deep playoff runs and is widely regarded as one of the greatest point guards in league history.
After his playing career, Nash transitioned into coaching, taking the Brooklyn Nets head job in 2020. He coached for parts of three seasons before stepping down in 2022.
Earlier this year, Nash joined LeBron James as co-host of the basketball podcast Mind the Game. He will also be part of Amazon Prime’s NBA coverage beginning in the 2025–26 season.
His new role with Phoenix comes during a major transitional period for the organization. The Suns parted ways with head coach Mike Budenholzer in April, hired Jordan Ott in June, and traded Kevin Durant to Houston as part of a record-breaking seven-team deal.
The front office also made structural changes. Brian Gregory was promoted to general manager while longtime executive James Jones moved on to the NBA’s league office. The team retooled its roster around Devin Booker by adding Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and several young prospects, including top-10 pick Khaman Maluach.
For Ishbia, Nash’s presence adds credibility as Phoenix looks to rebuild after a disappointing 36-win campaign last season. The former MVP already has strong ties to new head coach Ott, with both having worked together during their time in Brooklyn.
