The Charlotte Hornets have agreed to a contract extension with head coach Charles Lee following a season in which the franchise showed major improvement and emerged as one of the league’s stronger teams after a slow start.
Although Charlotte ultimately fell short of reaching the playoffs after losing in the play-in tournament, the organization made significant progress during Lee’s second season as head coach.
The Hornets improved by 25 wins compared to the previous year, continuing the rebuilding process under Lee’s leadership.
Lee originally joined Charlotte before the 2024-25 season after serving as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics.
Hornets executive Jeff Peterson praised Lee for helping establish the type of culture and structure the franchise wants moving forward.
“Charles has done an outstanding job establishing a foundation for who we want to be as a team,” Peterson said.
“From day one, Charles and his staff have prioritized player development, creating an environment where each of our players are committed to getting better and continue to improve.
“He has built a team-first culture rooted in accountability, hard work and professionalism. I’m excited to keep working closely with Charles as we continue to build the Hornets for long-term success.”
Lee also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue leading the franchise and said he believes the team is moving in the right direction.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this team and building on what we’ve started here in Charlotte,” Lee said.
“I want to thank Rick, Gabe and Jeff for their support as well as my coaching staff and the players for their tireless work and dedication.”
Lee added that he is encouraged by the progress the roster has shown and remains optimistic about the future.
“I’m excited about the direction we’re headed and our team’s bright future,” Lee said.
“Our players have shown a real commitment to growth, and I’m proud of the culture we’re establishing together. We’re just getting started, and I’m looking forward to the work ahead.”
