Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James addressed the media at 2025 Lakers Media Day, reflecting on his 23rd NBA season and what continues to drive him at age 40.

James said, “I’m excited about the opportunity to be able to play the game that I love for another season. Whatever the journey lays out this year, I’m super invested.”

On what motivates him to keep playing, he added, “The love of the game is still high. The love of the process is even higher. Training, recovering, and mentally preparing each season is gratifying no matter the good, the bad, the ugly.”

James acknowledged the influence of playing alongside younger talent, including Luka Doncic. “The motivation to be able to play alongside him every night is super motivating. That’s what I’m going to train my body for, to be the best player I can for him.”

He also spoke about recent additions to the Lakers roster. “Adding Marcus [Smart], Deandre [Ayton], and Jake [LaRavia] brings new dynamics to our team. Their skill sets and athleticism enhance our lineup, and we have a full year starting off at training camp, which will be very good for us.”

Discussing team chemistry, James highlighted the importance of time spent together. “The more time we’re together, the better we’re going to be. Starting from day one, the coaching staff knows how we can complement each other and play to our strengths.”

Reflecting on his passion for basketball, James shared, “It started when I was super young. Sports got me out of a tough situation and taught me competition, hard work, and discipline. That passion just stuck with me over the years.”

James also addressed the physical and mental demands of the season. “The Western Conference is super competitive. Preparing and understanding what we’re playing for excites me. Watching Luka play for Slovenia this offseason reminded me why I love this game.”

He discussed his personal focus this offseason. “I worked on my catch-and-shoot three-pointers and improving my effectiveness when I don’t have the ball. My OG Otis Carter always told me if you stay ready, you never got to get ready.”

On his age and performance, James said, “Age is a number. Playing at a high level in year 23 is humbling and gratifying. I try to inspire younger generations while staying present and appreciating every moment on the court.”
