Nikola Jokic admits Nuggets cannot defend after Warriors loss

Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic has expressed concern about his team’s defense following Monday’s defeat to the Golden State Warriors.

The loss dropped Denver to 1-2 to begin the 2026-27 NBA season, with defensive problems continuing to affect the team’s results.

Jokic acknowledged that the Nuggets have been dealing with similar issues since last season and said he was not surprised by their early struggles.

“I’m not surprised. Last year we were pointing something in defense, so I don’t know, it cannot happen overnight,” he explained.

The three-time MVP suggested that improving defensively will require more than minor adjustments, as Denver has yet to establish consistency on that end of the floor.

When asked which areas needed the most attention ahead of the team’s upcoming road trip, Jokic gave a brief assessment.

“To be honest, everything. We cannot defend,” he stressed.

Denver will have an opportunity to address its defensive issues during its next two games away from home.

The Nuggets are scheduled to face the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday before visiting the Phoenix Suns on Friday for an NBA Cup matchup.
