The New Orleans Pelicans have declined the $3.15 million team option on point guard Elfrid Payton, according to NBA insider Michael Scotto.
At 31 years old, Payton’s 2024-25 season was marked by frequent moves between the Pelicans and their G League affiliate, the Birmingham Squadron, as well as two separate 10-day contracts with the Charlotte Hornets.
He signed with New Orleans on October 11 but was waived five days later. After brief stints in the G League and with Charlotte, Payton rejoined New Orleans multiple times on short-term deals before signing a two-year deal with the team.
Despite limited playing time, Payton averaged 8.1 assists per 36 minutes for the Pelicans this season. His passing efficiency remained a highlight, though his scoring and shooting percentages declined compared to earlier years.
The Pelicans finished the 2024-25 NBA season with a 21-61 record, ranking 14th in the Western Conference. Their struggles on both ends of the court put them well out of playoff contention.
Payton’s career spans nine NBA seasons, including significant time with Orlando, Phoenix, New York, and Charlotte. Over 524 games, he has averaged 5.8 assists and 9.8 points per game.
With the Pelicans declining his option, Payton will enter free agency with expected interest from multiple teams.
