The Charlotte Hornets are adding veteran point guard Elfrid Payton on a 10-day contract. Payton, 30, returns to the NBA after a brief stint with the New Orleans Pelicans earlier this season.

NBA insider Shams Charania first reported the signing, noting Payton’s standout performance on Nov. 25, when he recorded 14 points and 21 assists for the Pelicans.

Across seven games with New Orleans, he averaged 6.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 6.9 assists in 20.5 minutes per game.

Charlotte, currently 14th in the Eastern Conference with a 12-36 record, is looking for backcourt depth amid injuries and roster changes. Payton brings experience and playmaking ability, which could help stabilize the Hornets’ rotation during his short-term deal.

The veteran guard has played for five NBA teams, including the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, and New York Knicks. Known for his court vision and defense, he has career averages of 10 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game.
