The New Orleans Pelicans have brought in guard Elfrid Payton and center Josh Oduro on non-guaranteed contracts for their training camp. Both players are expected to join the Pelicans’ G League affiliate, the Birmingham Squadron, after the NBA preseason concludes.
Elfrid Payton, a veteran guard, last appeared in the NBA during the 2021-22 season with the Phoenix Suns. Since then, he has spent time playing overseas in Puerto Rico and with the G League’s Fort Wayne/Indiana Mad Ants.
In his 32 games with the Mad Ants last season, Payton delivered solid numbers, averaging 11.9 points, 9.0 assists, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game, showing his playmaking and defensive abilities.
Josh Oduro, who went undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft, comes from a successful college career at Providence College. As a senior with the Friars, the 6-foot-9 forward made a strong impact, averaging 15.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game.
Despite going undrafted, Oduro’s performance in college has earned him an opportunity to develop with the Pelicans’ G League team as he seeks to find his place in professional basketball.
Both players will use the training camp as a chance to showcase their skills and potentially earn more playing time or a future spot on an NBA roster.
