The New Orleans Pelicans have signed Elfrid Payton to a second 10-day contract, NBA insider Michael Scotto reported. The veteran guard has provided valuable playmaking in recent games, including a 14-assist performance in a win against the Philadelphia 76ers and a 10-assist outing against the Golden State Warriors.
Payton, 31, has averaged 3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 7.8 assists in 19.8 minutes per game for New Orleans in March. His ability to distribute the ball has given the Pelicans a steady presence at the point guard position as they play out the final stretch of the season.
New Orleans currently holds a 21-54 record and is 14th in the Western Conference, already eliminated from postseason contention. Despite this, the team continues to evaluate its roster, and Payton’s contributions have earned him another opportunity.
This marks Payton’s third stint with the Pelicans this season. He originally joined the team in November and had a standout 21-assist performance against the Indiana Pacers before being waived in December. He later signed two consecutive 10-day contracts with the Charlotte Hornets before returning to New Orleans.
While Payton has not been a significant scoring threat, his playmaking and defensive instincts have made him a useful addition. His ability to control the tempo and create opportunities for teammates has been evident in his recent performances.
With just a few weeks remaining in the regular season, Payton will have another chance to showcase his passing skills. Whether he remains with the Pelicans beyond this contract or draws interest from other teams remains to be seen.
