The New Orleans Pelicans have waived guard Elfrid Payton, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. Payton, who rejoined the Pelicans in November after a short stint with their G League affiliate, played in seven games for New Orleans this season.
During his time with the Pelicans, Payton averaged 6.7 points, 6.9 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game. His standout performance came on November 25, when he recorded 14 points and a career-high 21 assists in a loss to the Phoenix Suns.
Payton’s journey with the Pelicans began on October 11, when he signed with the team. However, he was waived just five days later. He then joined the Birmingham Squadron, the Pelicans’ G League affiliate, before re-signing with New Orleans on November 20.
Despite his solid individual performance, Payton’s departure comes as the Pelicans continue to struggle this season. The team is on a nine-game losing streak and currently sits at the bottom of the Western Conference with a 4-18 record.
