The Detroit Pistons are actively gauging interest in forward Simone Fontecchio, according to NBA insider Michael Scotto. Fontecchio, 29, is on an expiring contract worth $8.3 million this season, making him a potentially attractive trade asset for the rebuilding Pistons.
Detroit’s front office is reportedly considering the possibility of creating significant cap space. If they move Fontecchio and Tim Hardaway Jr., who is also being linked to trade talks, the Pistons could free up around $24 million. This would allow Detroit to pursue targets like Nickeil Alexander-Walker and others in free agency.
Fontecchio joined the Pistons in the 2023-24 season after a stint with Utah. He has played 75 games this season, averaging 5.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, and nearly 17 minutes per game. His three-point shooting has dipped to around 33.5% this season, compared to 42.6% during part of last year with Detroit.
The team finished the 2024-25 regular season sixth in the Eastern Conference with a 44-38 record but fell to the New York Knicks in the first round of the playoffs.
Adding to the Pistons’ urgency is the situation with Malik Beasley’s gambling investigation. In addition, the Sacramento Kings are expected to pursue Dennis Schroder. That move could influence the Pistons’ roster decisions, especially if Detroit loses Tim Hardaway Jr.
Fontecchio’s expiring deal and solid, though inconsistent, production make him a valuable trade candidate. Teams looking for a wing player who can stretch the floor might see value in his experience and shooting ability.
