The Minnesota Timberwolves have struggled to find consistency at the point guard spot this season, prompting the team to explore ways to ease the offensive burden currently falling on stars Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle.
According to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, one intriguing possibility that has surfaced is Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant.
Krawczynski reported that Minnesota has “checked in with Memphis on Morant’s availability,” suggesting that the front office is at least gauging the market to see what it might take to add a dynamic playmaker.
However, he cautioned that discussions are still in the very early stages.
“They’re testing the waters a little bit,” Krawczynski said during an appearance on SiriusXM NBA Radio. “I don’t get the sense that there’s anything real close.”
The Timberwolves’ interest in Morant could grow depending on how their season unfolds.
“I do think that, if we get to late December and the Wolves are still treading water and that point guard position still has not solidified,” Krawczynski explained, “I do think that they could explore at least looking harder at Ja Morant.”
While Morant’s explosive scoring and playmaking could theoretically fill a major need for Minnesota, the financial logistics make any potential deal complicated.
The Wolves are currently operating well above the luxury tax line and are also constrained by the first apron of the collective bargaining agreement.
Those restrictions mean that any trade for Morant would require Minnesota to either send out matching salary or find creative ways to stay within the CBA’s trade limits.
For now, it appears to be little more than preliminary interest, but if Minnesota continues to search for backcourt stability and the Grizzlies become open to discussions, the idea of Morant in a Timberwolves uniform could gain traction as the season progresses.
