Shaquille O’Neal had high praise for Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg after his NBA Summer League debut, calling him “way above that 18-year-old curve.”
In an interview with DJ Siddiqi of RG, O’Neal advised against placing too much pressure on the top pick but acknowledged the forward’s advanced maturity. “You must realize he’s an 18-year-old kid. You can’t put too much pressure on him,” O’Neal said. “But I think he’s way above that 18-year-old curve.”
Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, averaged 20.5 points, 5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1 block in his two Summer League games before Dallas shut him down.
His debut against the Los Angeles Lakers drew a sellout crowd at Thomas & Mack Center, where he filled the box score despite shooting struggles. He scored 10 points on 5-for-21 shooting, adding six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a game-saving block in an 87–85 win.
Flagg followed that performance by erupting for 31 points against the San Antonio Spurs, connecting on 10-of-21 shots and sinking three three-pointers. Although the Mavericks lost 76–69, the rookie’s offensive skillset was on full display.
The organization decided to rest Flagg for the remainder of Summer League to protect his health and prepare him for training camp, according to Marc Stein.
O’Neal pointed out that players usually have a couple of seasons before expectations escalate but believes Flagg may accelerate that timeline. “From my experience, you get two years before people really start saying it’s time to win,” O’Neal said.
The Mavericks appear confident in Flagg’s readiness after his brief but impactful Summer League stint. His defensive instincts, rebounding, and offensive versatility have already generated buzz about his role in Dallas’ plans next season.
