Cam Spencer recently reflected on his heated exchange with Kevin Durant during the Memphis Grizzlies’ 120-118 win over the Phoenix Suns, describing it as part of his competitive nature.
In an interview with SportsKeeda, the Grizzlies guard said the moment stemmed from two competitors clashing in the heat of the game. “Two competitors going at it, man. It was a heated game,” Spencer told Mark Medina.
The exchange happened after Spencer buried a crucial corner three during a fourth-quarter run that helped Memphis secure the narrow victory. He emphasized that while emotions were high, he maintains respect for Durant’s accomplishments.
“But in the moment, I’m a competitor and I’m trying to win. So I don’t really care who we’re playing against,” Spencer said. “I have nothing but respect for KD and all that he has accomplished.”
The 25-year-old guard scored 16 points in that game, one of his best performances of the season, and credited his teammates for finding him open on the decisive shot.
Spencer also shared his excitement about his recent four-year, $10.5 million contract extension with Memphis. The former second-round pick said he feels motivated to reward the Grizzlies’ trust in him.
“I’m super excited. There’s no other organization that I’d rather compete with,” he said. “I told Zach [Kleiman] that I’m going to prove him right every single day.”
The Rutgers product played in 25 games during his rookie season, averaging 4.2 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while shooting 36.5 percent from three-point range. Despite limited minutes, he showcased reliable floor spacing and energy off the bench.
His performance against the Suns — and his fiery exchange with one of the league’s best players — highlighted his confidence and competitive edge, traits Memphis appears eager to invest in for the future.
With the Grizzlies coming off a 48-34 season and looking to advance past the first round of the playoffs, Spencer’s development could add much-needed depth to their backcourt.
