Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey will undergo left ankle surgery after re-spraining the joint during an offseason workout this week.
NBA insider Shams Charania reported the news, noting that Edey is expected to miss the beginning of the 2025–26 campaign. The 7-foot-4 All-Rookie big man sustained the injury while training in preparation for his sophomore year.
Edey’s agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, confirmed the development to ESPN, saying, “After consulting with the Grizzlies and multiple specialists, we decided this is the best approach for Zach long-term as it gets him back to 100% with no limitations. He will make a full recovery and be back better than ever.”
The former Purdue standout was drafted ninth overall by Memphis in the 2024 NBA Draft and signed with the franchise on July 6, 2024. He appeared in 66 regular season games, averaging 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks in 21.5 minutes per game while shooting 58% from the field.
Edey started all four playoff games for the Grizzlies this past spring, contributing 6.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per contest. Memphis was swept by the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round.
Despite the injury setback, the Grizzlies remain optimistic about Edey’s long-term outlook. The franchise, now under newly hired head coach Tuomas Iisalo, is entering its 31st NBA season and looking to build on a 48-win year that ended with a first-round exit.
Edey is expected to make a full recovery following surgery, though a firm timetable for his return has not been disclosed.
