The Memphis Grizzlies announced Tuesday that center Zach Edey underwent successful surgery on his left ankle and will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 season.
The franchise stated that the procedure addressed ongoing discomfort and bone stress in the ankle, and it expects the 23-year-old to make a full recovery before the start of the 2026-27 regular season.
The loss removes one of Memphis’ most efficient interior scorers from a rotation that has already struggled to find consistency. The Western Conference club sits at 23-37, 11th in the standings, and 23.5 games behind the conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder.
Edey appeared in 11 games, all starts, and averaged 13.6 points and 11.1 rebounds in 25.8 minutes per contest. He shot 63.3% from the field and converted 65.6% of his two-point attempts, numbers that reflect a heavy diet of paint touches and rim finishes.
Frontcourt responsibilities will also increase for Santi Aldama, who is averaging 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds in 43 games. The 6-foot-11 forward stretches the floor with a 35.0% mark from three-point range, but he does not replicate Edey’s size in the low block.
Memphis’ offense runs primarily through Ja Morant, who is producing 19.5 points and 8.1 assists per game in 20 outings. The All-Star guard will face more crowded driving lanes without a dominant screen-and-roll partner occupying the restricted area.
With 22 games remaining, the Grizzlies must adjust their defensive schemes and rebounding structure. The organization indicated that further updates on Edey’s recovery timeline will be provided as appropriate.
