Riley Minix, an undrafted rookie, secured a training camp contract with the Spurs in July. The ex-guard from Morehead State has made such a strong impression that he is now vying for one of the highly sought-after two-way roster positions, according to Tom Orsborn from the San Antonio Express News.
As he approached Tuesday night’s preseason game against the Heat, Minix had been averaging 7.8 points per game in just 7.8 minutes of play, while showcasing remarkable shooting accuracy of 57.1% from beyond the arc on 2.3 attempts. However, he didn’t see any playing time in the game, as the Spurs primarily utilized their regular starters.
“He’s a young man that is probably still pinching himself that he is on an NBA team and doing what he is doing because it’s probably not what he expected several years ago,” coach Gregg Popovich said of the 24-year-old, who played four seasons at an NAIA school before joining Morehead State. “But he is a tough young man. He is intelligent. He learns. And he can shoot the basketball. He has become a pleasant surprise.”
