Former NBA player Charlie Villanueva has sparked a debate about whether Dallas Mavericks star Cooper Flagg can become the face of the NBA, suggesting that the young forward’s race could affect his chances of taking on that role.
During a discussion with several former NBA players, Villanueva questioned whether a white American player could become the league’s leading representative in 2026.
“This might sound crazy, but I don’t think in 2026 a white dude could be, I’m gonna be real, could be the face of the league if I’m being honest.”
His comments prompted an immediate response from Theo, who disagreed with how Villanueva characterized Flagg.
“He don’t play like a white dude though.”
Villanueva continued by arguing that the NBA’s predominantly Black player population was relevant to the discussion.
“Because it’s a Black league right.”
Theo questioned what Villanueva meant by that statement.
“What does that even mean?”
Villanueva defended his position by referring to the league’s demographics.
“Am I lying … majority rules.”
The conversation then shifted toward which players could become the NBA’s biggest stars once established names such as LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant are no longer playing.
Raymond asked the group to consider who would currently represent the league if those three players were removed from the discussion.
“If you take LeBron, Steph, and KD out the league right now, just say they gone … who’s the face of the league right now?”
Villanueva responded by naming several international NBA stars as potential candidates.
“It’s one of them overseas cats. Could be Wemby. It could be Luka. It could be Giannis. It could be Jokic.”
His list included Victor Wembanyama, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic, all of whom have established themselves as prominent players in the league.
However, Thaddeus disagreed with Villanueva’s assessment and suggested that Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards was a more likely candidate.
“I don’t believe that. I’ll probably say next up is Ant.”
