The San Antonio Spurs have signed undrafted rookie Riley Minix to a two-way contract following his impressive performance in training camp and preseason. Minix, a former standout at Morehead State, has secured one of the highly coveted two-way spots on the Spurs roster.
NBA insider Michael Scotto confirmed the signing, tweeting: “The San Antonio Spurs signed Riley Minix to a two-way contract, team says. Minix averaged 7.7 points in 7.8 minutes in three preseason games for the Spurs.”
Minix’s preseason numbers, though from limited playing time, highlighted his potential. The 24-year-old averaged 7.8 points per game while shooting an efficient 57.1% from three-point range on 2.3 attempts. His strong shooting and quick scoring ability caught the attention of the Spurs coaching staff, despite not seeing action in their final preseason game against the Miami Heat.
The decision to offer Minix a two-way contract is a significant step for the rookie guard. It allows him to split time between the NBA and the G League, giving him opportunities to develop and potentially earn more minutes with the Spurs throughout the season. Under this arrangement, he can spend up to 50 games with San Antonio without counting toward the team’s 15-man roster limit.
Minix’s journey to the NBA has been marked by his ability to stand out as an all-around player. Last season at Morehead State, Minix averaged 20.9 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 33.8 minutes per game.
While his scoring ability is notable, Minix has also displayed strong rebounding and defensive skills, attributes that should serve him well as he navigates the professional ranks. With his two-way contract, Minix will likely see significant time with the Austin Spurs, San Antonio’s G League affiliate, where he can continue honing his craft and potentially play his way into a more prominent role.
