Klay Thompson, a four-time NBA champion, has chosen to continue his career with the Dallas Mavericks, ending his 13-year tenure with the Golden State Warriors.
Thompson had been deciding between the Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers for his next move. LeBron James reportedly contacted the sharpshooter as soon as free agency began to recruit him to L.A.
In a strategic move, the Mavericks enlisted their own superstar Kyrie Irving to engage in a live conversation with Thompson to counter James’ efforts.
NBA insider Marc Stein tweeted that Thompson had face-to-face meetings with both the Lakers and Mavericks in L.A. on Sunday night.
Additionally, Dallas utilized Irving, Thompson’s former USA Basketball teammate, to counter the recruiting efforts of James.
The Warriors have agreed to take back two second-round picks to complete the sign-and-trade deal sending Thompson to Dallas. This trade creates a trade exception just shy of $16 million for Golden State to use for future transactions.
