NBA insider Marc Stein recently revealed that Kyrie Irving played a significant role in the Dallas Mavericks’ successful acquisition of Klay Thompson this offseason.
Thompson’s admiration for Irving, dating back to their time as teammates in international competitions, was a key element in his decision to join the Mavericks.
Stein highlighted the strong respect Thompson has for Irving, particularly from their experiences together at the 2016 Olympics and the 2014 World Cup.
“I covered the 2016 Olympics and the 2014 World Cup where they were teammates, and you could tell then that Klay had a real admiration for Kyrie,” Stein noted.
This respect, according to Stein, was instrumental in the Mavericks’ efforts to bring Thompson to Dallas.
“There is no question, Kyrie Irving is one of the players and peers that Klay Thompson really, really, really respects,” Stein explained.
This mutual respect between the two players was not just a personal bond but became a powerful recruiting tool for the Mavericks.
“When a peer pitches you, it just resonates more strongly many more times than not,” Stein added.
Stein further emphasized that while team executives like Nico Harrison, Jason Kidd, and Michael Finley were involved in the recruitment process, it was Irving’s personal connection with Thompson that made the difference.
The Mavericks have been active this offseason in building a roster capable of competing at the highest level, and securing a player of Thompson’s caliber was a major coup for the organization.
Thompson, a four-time NBA champion, brings a wealth of experience and skill to Dallas, making him a valuable addition to the team.
Irving’s role in this acquisition demonstrates his growing influence within the Mavericks organization, both on and off the court.
As the Mavericks prepare for the upcoming season, the two stars have participated in an offseason workout camp in Los Angeles.
