Nick Humby has been appointed as an Independent Chair of the British Basketball Federation (BBF).

Due to officially take up the position on 01 January 2016, Humby will lead the new body which has attained its FIBA membership with effect from 01 October 2016.

The British Basketball Federation is set to be the single driving force for basketball at the Great Britain level.  It means that GB will compete in FIBA competitions not only at senior and U20 age group, but also U16 and U18 levels from the summer of 2017.

Humby is currently Interim Chief Operating Officer at the FA (Football Association) and previously held a similar position at the Lawn Tennis Association.

He has held other high profile roles, including five years as Finance Director at Manchester United, as well as many executive and non-executive positions in the Arts and the Media.

“I am honoured and delighted to be offered the independent Chairmanship of the new British Basketball Federation (BBF) Board as it prepares to take on the responsibility for FIBA membership next year,” said Humby.

“We have an exciting opportunity to grow the sport though the collaboration of the new organisation with the three Home Nations, who were bold and visionary in signing up for the change.

“There is a great deal to do to ensure that the BBF, together with the Home Nations, are set up to deliver on this opportunity.

“I very much look forward to meeting everyone involved in the sport and working with the new Board to develop the plans and build the relationships required to deliver the success we all aspire to.”

Ahead of Humby taking up the reins, Bill McInnes OBE will continue to act as the Interim Chair in his capacity as a Transitional Director from British Performance Basketball.

He was quick to highlight the positives moving forward and stated, “In Nick, I think the sport has attracted someone with a range of skills and experience which is a perfect match to deal both with ambitious plans for the future and the challenges on the journey.

“Add to that the calibre of the other board members and you have a group that any sport would be delighted to have.

“I am sure it will take basketball in Britain to the next level,” added McInnes.

The BBF Board will be making a statement in coming days to confirm its directional strategic priorities.
