Deandre Ayton, who joined the Lakers this offseason after a buyout with Portland, has yet to practice alongside Luka Doncic or LeBron James.

Speaking ahead of the 2025–26 preseason, Ayton described early sessions as “still training camp” despite having a few practices under his belt.

“I’m starting to know their plays, what their schemes are, and in general Lakers basketball,” Ayton said, noting he’s growing more comfortable with the offense.

Ayton emphasized the importance of learning terminology and adjusting to teammates’ playing styles. “There’s a lot of new faces out there… just more talking and helping each other out,” he added.

Despite not working with the stars yet, Ayton appreciates the opportunity to practice with other teammates. He described getting reps in the pick-and-roll and reading defensive rotations as valuable preparation.

Ayton also shared a lighter moment, recounting a ride with Doncic and James. “I never done that before… it was good seeing that, seeing them behind a wheel,” he said.

Through two preseason games, the Lakers have struggled, falling 81–103 to Phoenix and 103–111 at Golden State. Ayton led the team with eight rebounds in the opener and seven in the second game.

The center highlighted the focus on defensive communication during early practices. “Just getting out of the comfort zone, communicating to one another,” he said, pointing out that transition defense will be a key area for the team.

Ayton praised the coaching staff for breaking down film and helping him study Doncic and James in advance. “They’re superstars, they’re geniuses… we’re really just waiting for us to catch up,” he said.
