Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla has explained why he wears both a Whoop fitness tracker and an Apple Watch, revealing that he initially wanted to compare their heart rate measurements during workouts.
Mazzulla discussed his unusual setup during a conversation with Welsh, who noticed that the Celtics coach had attached a Whoop device to his Apple Watch bracelet.
Welsh: “Do you have a Whoop attached to the bottom of your Apple Watch bracelet?”
Mazzulla: “Yeah, absolutely. We’re big on two-for-ones here.”
When asked whether he preferred one device over the other, Mazzulla explained that he originally purchased the Apple Watch because he was unhappy with the workout data recorded by his Whoop.
Welsh: “Is there one that you prefer? Are you testing them against each other?”
Mazzulla: “It started that way. Essentially, I wasn’t averaging enough zone four minutes, and I was mad at the Whoop. I was like, ‘All right, well, I need two heart rate monitors because I want to see where this is at.’”
Zone four refers to a high-intensity heart rate training zone, typically associated with exercise performed at approximately 80% to 90% of a person’s maximum heart rate.
Mazzulla initially suspected that his Whoop might not be accurately recording the intensity of his training sessions.
However, after comparing the readings with his Apple Watch, he discovered that both devices produced similar results.
“So I got the Apple Watch, and it ended up kind of being the same. So I was like, ‘Well, then I’m just not training hard enough.’”
