Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd addressed the departures of key assistants during the 2025 Media Day.

Mike Curtis reported Kidd saying, “It wasn’t jump ship. It was opportunities for guys to climb the ladder. The guys who left will be missed. Sweeney, Duds and Alex…It’s a compliment that we must be doing something right. Not wrong.”

The Mavericks confirmed a restructured coaching staff for 2025–26, with Frank Vogel joining as associate head coach alongside Jay Triano, Popeye Jones, Phil Handy, Mike Penberthy, Eric Hughes, Josh Broghamer, Dru Anthrop, Keith Veney, and Jordan Sears.

Departing assistants include Darrell Armstrong, Jared Dudley, Alex Jensen, God Shammgod, and Sean Sweeney, creating openings for new hires and promotions.

Vogel, a former head coach of the Lakers, Magic, Pacers, and Suns, brings championship experience, having guided Los Angeles to the 2020 NBA title.

Handy, renowned for developing stars such as LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kawhi Leonard, joins the Mavericks to focus on skill development and defensive instruction.

Popeye Jones returns to Dallas, offering experience in player relations and frontcourt development from previous coaching roles with Indiana and Denver.

Penberthy contributes shooting expertise, while Dru Anthrop provides analytics and scouting support; Keith Veney and Jordan Sears expand their roles in player development.

Eric Hughes and Josh Broghamer remain on staff, providing continuity in the system Kidd has established since becoming head coach in 2021.
