The Dallas Mavericks have officially added veteran assistants Phil Handy and Popeye Jones to Jason Kidd’s coaching staff, filling key vacancies ahead of the 2025–26 NBA season.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported that both coaches agreed to terms with Dallas after discussions that also involved interest from other teams. Handy had drawn attention from the New York Knicks, while Jones was previously serving in an assistant role elsewhere.
The two experienced coaches arrive to replace Jared Dudley, who left for the Denver Nuggets, and God Shammgod, who joined the Orlando Magic earlier this offseason. Their addition gives Kidd a refreshed staff with a blend of player development and defensive expertise.
Handy, known league-wide for his skill development work, has won championships as an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Toronto Raptors. He specializes in guard development and has been credited with helping stars like Kyrie Irving and Kawhi Leonard sharpen their games.
Jones, a former Mavericks forward and a fan favorite during his playing days in Dallas, reunites with Kidd after the two shared the court during the 1990s. He brings years of NBA coaching experience, with a focus on big men and rebounding.
The Mavericks also elevated coaching consultant Frank Vogel to associate head coach. Jay Triano, another recent hire, completes a retooled staff.
