Russell Westbrook’s future remains unresolved as training camp approaches, and the Sacramento Kings continue to be the only team showing sustained interest.

NBA insider Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report reported that no other franchise has emerged as a serious suitor. He noted that Westbrook’s best chance at an NBA deal above the veteran minimum rests on Sacramento making roster adjustments to create space.

Fischer added that the Kings’ new general manager, Scott Perry, has targeted Westbrook as a backup option behind Dennis Schroder. However, the front office has delayed action while monitoring trade talks involving Golden State forward Jonathan Kuminga.

Sacramento’s decision is also linked to the status of guard Malik Monk, whose name surfaced in various trade discussions this summer. While Fischer noted that Monk was floated in potential deals, other reports, including from Marc Stein, suggest the organization has no plans to move him in order to sign Westbrook.

If Monk remains in place, Sacramento could look instead to create flexibility by moving rookie guard Devin Carter or exploring other smaller deals. Until then, Westbrook will remain unsigned.

The former MVP averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds last season with Denver, adding 11.7 points per game during the playoffs. He became a free agent after declining his player option earlier this offseason.

At 35, Westbrook still brings pace and energy, making him a candidate to lead second units for a team with playoff aspirations. Sacramento values that skill set as it looks to support stars Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine, and DeMar DeRozan in the Western Conference race.

Fischer also pointed out that the lack of offers illustrates the financial challenges for veterans at this stage of their careers. Without Sacramento’s involvement, Westbrook’s only option in the NBA may be a minimum contract.

With training camp opening on September 29 and an October 1 deadline for roster compliance, pressure is mounting for the Kings to decide. Whether they pivot from Kuminga talks could ultimately determine Westbrook’s landing spot.
