The Sacramento Kings are finalizing an agreement to hire veteran NBA executive Scott Perry as their new general manager, according to a report by NBA insider Shams Charania.
The move comes just hours after Sacramento’s 2024-25 season officially ended with a 120-106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Play-In Tournament.
Perry, who most recently served as general manager of the New York Knicks, returns to Sacramento nearly eight years after a brief stint with the franchise in 2017.
He started his NBA executive career with the Detroit Pistons in 2000 and later held roles with the Seattle SuperSonics, Orlando Magic, and Knicks.
Perry’s hiring follows the departure of Monte McNair, who parted ways with the Kings after five seasons, including a 2023 Executive of the Year award.
McNair’s exit was reported by Charania shortly before news of Perry’s hiring surfaced, signaling a rapid transition at the top of Sacramento’s basketball operations.
Under McNair, the Kings ended a 16-year playoff drought in 2023 and acquired All-Star center Domantas Sabonis, but the franchise regressed this season after a turbulent year.
Sacramento fired head coach Mike Brown midseason and traded away De’Aaron Fox in February as part of a major roster shakeup.
Doug Christie took over as interim coach but went 9-17 to close the year, as the Kings failed to secure a postseason spot for the second time in three seasons.
Perry now takes over a roster featuring veteran scorers in DeRozan and LaVine, along with Sabonis, but without a clear long-term point guard following Fox’s departure.
His immediate priorities include hiring a new head coach, reshaping the roster, and restoring direction to a franchise that has missed the playoffs in 18 of the last 19 seasons.
