FIBA has announced a revised basketball schedule for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with games now set to begin two days before the official Opening Ceremony.
The adjustment was confirmed following a meeting of FIBA’s Executive Committee, which reviewed updates on international competitions and preparations for future global events.
The change allows the Quarter-Finals of the Olympic basketball tournament to be spread across two days instead of being compressed into one. Officials believe this format will improve competitive balance and recovery time for athletes.
Another significant update ensures that no Olympic basketball game in Los Angeles will start before 12:00 PM local time. This decision is designed to enhance the in-arena atmosphere for fans and maximize global television audiences.
By moving the start of the competition forward, FIBA and the IOC aim to better align scheduling with player performance and broadcaster needs. The shift also helps avoid clashes with other major Olympic events.
The revised structure reflects the growing global demand for basketball as one of the Olympics’ premier sports. Basketball has consistently ranked among the most-watched events during the Games, particularly with the NBA’s global star power driving interest.
The Los Angeles 2028 tournament is expected to feature 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams, with qualification taking place through upcoming FIBA events. The competition will include teams from every region, advancing through Continental Cups and World Cup qualifiers.
Olympic basketball has a long tradition of iconic performances, from the USA’s “Dream Team” in 1992 to more recent challenges from Spain, France, and Australia. The new format aims to ensure the next chapter delivers the same level of intensity.
Los Angeles last hosted the Olympic Games in 1984, when basketball saw Team USA win gold led by college stars who would later become NBA legends. The 2028 edition will mark basketball’s return to the city with a revamped format designed for the modern global audience.
