David Vanterpool says Bub Carrington’s toughness and character make him a cornerstone of the Washington Wizards’ future, in a wide-ranging Q&A with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson.

Vanterpool, an assistant coach with the Wizards, discussed Carrington after revealing offseason work at his new facility, Domain Fitness & Performance.

On Carrington specifically, Vanterpool said he’s “very excited” about the young guard’s growth on and off the court. “He carries that toughness, he carries that resilience, he carries that work ethic,” Vanterpool said, calling Carrington a true competitor.

Vanterpool emphasized the human side of Carrington’s rise, noting his close relationship with the player’s family and the pride he feels watching the rookie develop. “He’s never gonna quit and I’m proud of him watching him grow into the young man he is,” Vanterpool added in the interview.

Carrington, Washington’s 2024 first-round acquisition, played all 82 games as a rookie and averaged 9.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists. His durability and impact earned him a spot on the 2025 NBA All-Rookie Second Team, a point Vanterpool used to underline the guard’s reliability.

Vanterpool also praised the Wizards’ summer program, saying this offseason “leveled up” the team’s development and allowed theory to become practice. He highlighted the value of organized summer runs — including the LA gatherings spearheaded by Rico Hines — for chemistry and skill acquisition.

On other roster additions, Vanterpool raved about Cam Whitmore’s physicality and fearlessness, calling him “one of the most physical offensive players you’ll have to deal with.” He also shared admiration for league stars like Karl-Anthony Towns and Damian Lillard, noting their playoff performances and personal resilience.
