D’Angelo Russell has expressed interest in continuing his second stint with the Brooklyn Nets, where he has played a total of 152 games over his career.

However, with his $18.7 million contract set to expire, Russell acknowledges that his future with the team is uncertain and largely out of his hands.

“I don’t think it’s in my control, to be honest,” Russell told Brian Lewis of the New York Post.

“I’ve been on a team before where everybody was free agents, too. So they’ve got the leverage, they’ve got the cards. If they decide to bring me back, cool. If not, we’ll figure it out.”

Since being traded back to Brooklyn at the deadline, Russell has been a steady contributor, averaging 13.3 points and 5.7 assists per game.

The Nets have a history with the 29-year-old guard, as he blossomed into an All-Star during the 2018-19 season before being sign-and-traded to Golden State in the Kevin Durant deal.

When asked if he hopes to remain with the Nets, Russell admitted he’d like to stay but is also embracing the uncertainty of free agency for the first time in his career.

“Hope? Yeah. [But] I just want to be in the NBA,” he said. “I don’t think I’ve ever been a free agent. I look back on it, I’ve never been. For me, it’s a weird feeling, but see how it goes.

“I signed an extension with the Lakers, two years – one-plus-one, player option. I just never hit [free agency]. So I’m excited to see.”

As the offseason approaches, Russell’s future remains up in the air, and the Nets will have a decision to make regarding their backcourt moving forward.
