The NBA’s attempt to establish a partnership with EuroLeague is reportedly facing significant resistance from the competition’s shareholder clubs.
According to SDNA, virtually all EuroLeague shareholders are currently opposed to the proposal presented by the NBA.
Some clubs favor maintaining EuroLeague as an independent competition and have described the terms as “unacceptable” and “colonialist.”
Other teams reportedly have not completely ruled out working with the NBA, but believe the existing proposal would need to be substantially improved before negotiations could advance.
The timing is significant, as October 6 has reportedly been established by the NBA as the deadline for EuroLeague to provide its response.
Discussions are taking place while EuroLeague owners meet in Cernobbio, Italy, with the relationship with the NBA and the future structure of European basketball among the issues being considered.
