Memphis Tigers forward Nick Jourdain recently opened up about the players who influenced his game. In an interview with NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Jourdain named Carmelo Anthony and Paul George as key inspirations.
Growing up a New York Knicks fan, Jourdain watched Anthony play regularly on MSG Network. He also admired George’s smooth footwork and athleticism, saying it reminded him of Kyrie Irving’s fluidity at a taller height.
Now, as he develops his own skill set, Jourdain looks to players with similar athletic profiles. He studies Aaron Gordon’s game and tries to incorporate elements from Kyle Kuzma’s playing style.
Jourdain also discussed what it’s like learning under Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway. He emphasized Hardaway’s high basketball IQ, saying the former NBA star constantly provides game-changing insights.
“His IQ for the game is genius,” Jourdain said. “He’ll give you a key, and it will work every single time.”
One lesson that stood out to Jourdain involved timing his cuts from the corner to catch lobs. Hardaway’s detailed approach has helped him improve in multiple areas, including passing, ball handling, and shooting.
Jourdain is focused on helping Memphis make a strong postseason push. The Tigers currently hold the top spot in the American Athletic Conference with a 16-2 record in conference play and a 29-5 overall record.
The junior forward has yet to experience the NCAA Tournament and is eager to change that this year. “A berth for me will mean everything because I haven’t touched the tournament before,” he said.
Jourdain is averaging 6.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game this season. His contributions on both ends of the floor have played a role in Memphis’ success as they aim for a deep tournament run.
