LeBron James and Stephen Curry, two of the NBA’s most iconic players, have often been rivals in the Finals. However, this summer they teamed up for Team USA in pursuit of an Olympic gold medal at the 2024 Paris Games.
While speaking to reporters ahead of the Lakers’ preseason matchups with the Golden State Warriors, James was asked if he could ever team up with Curry again in the NBA. His response was cautious, stating, “I have no idea,” via Dave McMenamin of ESPN.
James acknowledged the camaraderie built with Curry during their time playing together for Team USA. He reflected on the experience, saying it was everything he had hoped for, especially in the pressure-filled atmosphere of the Olympics.
“It was everything and more,” James said. “I was super excited to finally team up with him in a win-or-die atmosphere. That’s what it was, being part of the Olympics.”
The partnership between the two players created memorable moments, including Curry’s scoring flurries in the gold medal game and James’ strong defense during the semifinals. These experiences have left a lasting impression on James, who expressed his admiration for Curry’s impact on the game and his legacy.
“I understand what Steph has done for this game,” James said. “I understand what he’s done for his organization, for the community, and for people all over the world. Just by his approach to the game and how he is as a man.”
Despite this mutual respect, the possibility of the two stars teaming up again in the NBA appears unlikely. James, now 39, has indicated a desire to finish his career with the Lakers, having recently signed a two-year contract extension with Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Curry, 36, extended his contract with the Warriors, committing to stay with the franchise through the 2026-27 season.
In fact, reports from last season revealed that the Warriors had inquired about trading for James before the deadline. However, no deal materialized, as Lakers governor Jeanie Buss reportedly directed the Warriors to James’ agent, Rich Paul.
Both players seem content with their respective franchises. Curry has made it clear he wants to be a “Warrior for life,” while James reiterated his commitment to Los Angeles, where he also has the opportunity to play alongside his son, Bronny James.
