Jeff Van Gundy admitted he has been impressed by the ability of the Dallas Mavericks to land star players via the Draft, like Dirk Nowitzki and Luka Doncic.

Both players came to Dallas via a trade (Nowitzki from Dallas, Doncic from Atlanta) and became top superstars.

“They (the Mavs) made two draft night trades. One Nowitzki and the second Trae Young and traded for Doncic. Doncic was great from from Day 1, Nowitzki was one of the worst players I have ever seen early in his career.

He and Steve Nash were awful, but they saw the love of the game, the skill, the passion and became MVPs down the road.

It is amazing how they traded and got star players they didn’t even originally draft. I am impressed with that,” Van Gundy said during his recent appearance in the ”World of Basketball” podcast with Fran Fraschilla on SiriusXM.

Nowitzki led Dallas to the 2011 NBA title and retired as one of the best players in NBA history. For his part, Doncic is already considered one of the best players in the league.
