With the NBA trade deadline one week away, Giannis Antetokounmpo has become the central figure in league-wide trade discussions. Milwaukee’s season has stalled, and league insiders report that both sides are now preparing for a potential separation.
Speaking on Inside the NBA on Wednesday, ESPN senior NBA insider Shams Charania confirmed that Antetokounmpo has informed Bucks officials he is ready to move on. “He has communicated with the Bucks… that he believes the time has come now for both of these sides… to move on after 13 years,” Charania said.
Milwaukee currently sits 12th in the Eastern Conference at 18–27, nine games under .500, with limited roster flexibility. Charania noted that the franchise explored short-term solutions, including restructuring Damian Lillard’s contract and acquiring Myles Turner, but the results have not changed the team’s trajectory.
Antetokounmpo’s priority is competing for another championship, according to sources cited by Charania. The two-time MVP led the Bucks to the 2021 title, the franchise’s first in 50 years, but the current roster lacks a realistic path back to contention.
As a result, Milwaukee has begun listening to aggressive trade offers that include All-Star level players and significant draft capital. Charania described the process as the culmination of nine months of dialogue between Antetokounmpo, his camp, and general manager Jon Horst.
Among the teams most prominently linked to the 31-year-old star are the Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Miami Heat. “Those are four of the strong suitors for Giannis right now on the market,” Charania said during the broadcast.
Golden State’s position has been further reinforced by ESPN insider Brian Windhorst, who reported that the Warriors are uniquely equipped to meet Milwaukee’s demands. “Giannis is ready to be gone. He wants to be traded. The Bucks are ready to listen to offers,” Windhorst said.
The Warriors control all of their future first-round picks and swaps, giving them flexibility to prioritize draft assets rather than win-now players. Windhorst added that Milwaukee’s focus is shifting toward improving its draft position and accelerating a rebuild.
Minnesota and New York offer different competitive appeals, with both teams positioned near the top of their respective conferences. Miami remains a recurring presence in superstar trade discussions, while maintaining flexibility should the Giannis market extend beyond the deadline.
Antetokounmpo is currently sidelined with a calf strain, but his status has not slowed league-wide momentum. As the deadline approaches, front offices across both conferences are waiting for the league’s biggest domino to fall.
