Sacramento Kings head coach Doug Christie addressed key issues following a 139-116 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night at Little Caesars Arena. Christie pinpointed physicality as a decisive factor in the defeat.
“It was a lack of physicality. We got to keep people in front of us, grab hold and control,” Christie said. “That level of physicality wasn’t there, and that’s where the game started to get away from us.”
Christie also touched on the altercation late in the fourth quarter. “It ain’t a lot of explanation. We got to be physical. We’ll get to the point where we dishing out what we need to dish out,” he explained.
The coach offered praise for rookie Nique Clifford, who earned a starting role. “I thought Nique did a good job. He continues to improve, handles the ball, shoots the three, and rebounds. He got the technical at the end and stepped up for a teammate, and that’s how you earn respect in this league,” Christie said.
Christie discussed the pairing of Maxime Raynaud and Dylan Cardwell, acknowledging some growing pains. “It can happen when you’re looking for synergy and continuity. I enjoy coaching both of them. They’ll go through ups and downs, and we are going to ride with them,” he stated.
Malik Monk also drew Christie’s attention for his resilience. “I was happy to see him back. Watching Malik grow on and off the court has been a great gift. He’s taken his craft seriously and delivered night-to-night. I have absolutely zero problem with him,” Christie said.
Sacramento struggled to contain the Pistons’ offensive attack, falling behind after Detroit outscored them 43-30 in the second quarter. Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 29 points and 11 assists, while Jalen Duren added 18 and Tobias Harris 16. Malik Monk led the Kings with 19 points, and DeMar DeRozan contributed 16.
Christie’s team has now dropped five straight games, falling to a 12-35 record, while the Pistons improved to 33-11. Sacramento center Domantas Sabonis, back from a two-month knee injury, added 12 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists in 24:44.
Both teams are set for road games on Tuesday night, with the Kings visiting New York and Detroit heading to Denver. Christie emphasized that building physicality and team cohesion will be key for the Kings moving forward.
