Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue acknowledged the challenges his team faced in Tuesday’s 135-118 loss to the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena.
“We couldn’t get stops, get off… Luka just beats us apart,” Lue said, highlighting the difficulty in containing Luka Doncic, who finished with 43 points, nine rebounds, and 13 assists.
Lue praised individual offensive contributions despite the loss. “Seeing KD get going, see John Collins get going… playing small ball and letting Collins set screens was really effective,” he noted, emphasizing the positives amidst the team’s struggles.
The Clippers struggled to contain Doncic early, as he hit seven of 12 three-pointers and exploited defensive rotations. Lue said the Lakers’ penetration created open opportunities, adding, “They were helping and loading up on James and Kawhi, just making a simple play… he was a recipient of some wide-open threes.”
Kawhi Leonard, returning from a 10-game injury absence, scored 19 points, and Lue stressed the importance of his health in improving team defense. “When he gets healthy and can get his minutes up, it’ll be better for him,” Lue said, noting the challenge of asking too much too soon.
Defensive lapses and rebounding were key factors in the Clippers’ defeat. Lue cited easy putbacks as a turning point. “Offensive rebounding hurt us… we had the lead up one and it snowballed from there,” he explained, emphasizing the need to better pursue the basketball and manage spacing.
The Clippers are now 5-13 through 18 games, prompting Lue to discuss solutions. “We’ve got to play better… teams are better than we are right now,” he said, noting the pattern of strong quarters followed by breakdowns in the third or fourth.
Injuries and roster inconsistencies have compounded the Clippers’ struggles. “When you’re missing four key guys, it’s tough… young guys are trying to figure things out,” Lue said, adding that maintaining effort and intent is critical to returning to form.
Lue remains optimistic about the team’s long-term progress. “We will get on track… we need a couple wins, get our guys playing the right amount of minutes… if we have the right intent and do things the right way, things will get better,” he said.
Despite the setback, the Clippers showed flashes of competitiveness, with James Harden contributing 29 points and nine assists. However, the Lakers’ depth and shooting (57% overall, 45% from three) proved too much to overcome. Los Angeles extended their winning streak to five games, moving to 13-4, while the Clippers aim to regroup against Memphis in their next matchup.
