Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue discussed the team’s 103-88 victory over the Lakers at Intuit Dome on Saturday.
Lue praised Kawhi Leonard despite his shooting struggles: “He didn’t shoot the ball well. He was eight for 24, but he did a good job getting to the free throw line, having 12 rebounds, and when he’s rebounding the basketball, we know he’s engaged and ready to go.”
On Ivica Zubac’s early exit with an ankle injury, Lue said, “Once Zu went down, we had to play a different style of basketball that we’re not really good at. Continue to trust the pass, continue if you don’t have it, get to the next action.”
Lue highlighted Kris Dunn’s defensive energy: “He made a big three, did a good job harassing Luka, picking him up high, giving him different looks. Defensively, he’s our heart, dives on loose balls, and that’s just who he is. We need that energy every single night.”
The coach addressed managing frustration amid a long losing streak: “How I am at home and how I have to be in the gym is totally different. At home I could be down, but when I come to work, they’re looking to their leader. I have to be upbeat, positive, and get these guys ready to play.”
John Collins’ performance earned praise as well: “His energy was good, setting pick and rolls, rolling with Brook, grabbing 12 rebounds, and making a huge three when we couldn’t stop the bleeding.”
Lue stressed the importance of rebounding: “It was a point of emphasis, but we still gave up seven to LaRavia. We have to get better with guards crashing and taking care of those situations.”
Reflecting on the team’s mental approach, Lue said, “When things go wrong, they snowball quick. Teams are going to make runs; you can’t get discouraged. You just have to play through the tape. No matter when it gets tough, we have to get tougher.”
Brook Lopez also made a notable impact: “He’s huge because he can post smaller guys. When he’s on the perimeter, he can make shots. If we get the right matchups, we can take advantage of that.”
Lue acknowledged challenges with rookie Yanic Konan Niederhauser’s knee, adding, “Not sure yet, but we have to use Brook more often and be ready to play through different styles when Zu plays limited minutes.”
Saturday’s win marked the Clippers’ first home victory since October 31, snapping a five-game losing streak. Leonard led with 32 points, 12 rebounds, and three steals, while James Harden added 21 points and 10 assists.
