Jaxson Hayes praised the Lakers’ unity after their 135-118 victory over the Clippers at Crypto.com Arena on Tuesday, November 25.
“I feel a lot of camaraderie with this team and we’re all really close… we all want to protect each other,” Hayes said regarding the late-game scuffle involving Luka Doncic and Kris Dunn.
Hayes confirmed Doncic immediately covered his technical fine, calling it a reflection of the team’s strong bonds. “He definitely said he got me,” Hayes noted.
The Lakers’ teamwork was evident throughout, particularly in their defensive strategy against Ivica Zubac, who scored just 10 points after a 38-point, 13-rebound outing in his previous game.
The 25-year-old center detailed his role in the short roll, emphasizing quick reads and decision-making. “When they start blitzing Luka, I know I got to short roll and just play make out of there… if not, I kick out for a three or a lob,” Hayes explained, highlighting his adaptability in the Lakers’ offense.
Doncic led the team with 43 points, nine rebounds, and 13 assists, including a 32-point first half that powered Los Angeles to a 69-66 halftime lead. Austin Reaves added 31 points and nine rebounds, while LeBron James contributed 25 points, including 16 in the second half, extending the Lakers’ winning streak to five games.
Hayes emphasized the trio’s potential as they continue to find chemistry. “We all know what this team can be. We’re a very skilled and talented team… it’s just part of the growing pains of the season,” he said, reflecting on the Lakers’ offensive evolution.
Regarding the NBA Cup quarterfinal setting, Hayes sees it as valuable preparation for high-stakes games. “It just prepares you for those big game moments… we just got to stay locked in,” he said.
The team’s defensive efforts were also highlighted, with Hayes noting that helping on post coverage and boxing out Zubac limited the Clippers’ efficiency on the boards.
Despite concerns over the slippery floor, Hayes remained focused. “Shoot, you just got to control what you control,” he said, illustrating the team’s focus amid challenging conditions. The Lakers’ dominance in shooting (57% overall, 45% from three) and rebounding (38-29) underscored their depth and cohesion.
The victory clinched the Lakers’ NBA Cup group, moving them to 13-4 overall, with Los Angeles set to host the Dallas Mavericks on Friday. The Clippers return home to face Memphis in their next matchup.
