Jae’Sean Tate is heading to the Rockets’ G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, as first reported by Kelly Iko of Yahoo Sports.
Iko notes that this move was something both Tate and the Rockets agreed on, with the goal of giving the 30-year-old forward meaningful minutes and an opportunity to rediscover his rhythm on the court.
Even though Houston has recently been shorthanded at the forward spots due to injuries to Dorian Finney-Smith and Tari Eason, Tate has still found himself out of the rotation.
He has been a healthy scratch in two of Houston’s last three games, and in the only game he did enter during that span, he saw just two minutes of action.
Tate began the 2025/26 season a step behind after missing the opener and operating under a minutes restriction while returning from offseason ankle surgery.
The forward has spent his entire six-year NBA career with the Rockets, and after hitting free agency this past summer, he decided to come back to Houston on a one-year minimum-salary contract.
Assignments to the NBAGL are usually reserved for younger players developing their games or veterans recovering from injuries, making it somewhat atypical for a fully healthy veteran to sign off on a G League stint.
However, given that Tate has logged only 41 total minutes over eight appearances this season, it’s not hard to see why he would welcome any chance to get on the court.
