Russell Westbrook’s NBA future may hinge on one franchise, as the Sacramento Kings are currently the only team linked to the former MVP.
Ashish Mathur of Dallas Hoops Journal cited NBA insider Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, who reported that Sacramento remains the lone destination under consideration. Fischer explained that while the Kings are evaluating other roster moves, they are still viewed as the “most likely outcome” if Westbrook continues his career.
The nine-time All-Star became an unrestricted free agent after declining his 2025–26 player option with the Denver Nuggets. Last season, he averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds in 75 games, largely off the bench. He also chipped in 11.7 points per game during Denver’s playoff run.
Sacramento has maintained interest in Westbrook for weeks. Sactown Sports host Carmichael Dave previously reported that the sides had been in communication “for a while,” placing the odds of a deal at “80-20 he’s a King.”
The Kings’ backcourt changed dramatically after trading De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs in February. Since then, the team has acquired Dennis Schroder and pursued Tyus Jones, who ultimately joined the Orlando Magic.
Despite that, Fischer noted that Westbrook’s name has consistently surfaced as the organization searches for veteran depth. His experience, leadership, and ability to generate offense could add balance to a roster centered on Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine, and DeMar DeRozan.
Still, questions remain about fit. Sam Amick of The Athletic told Sactown Sports 1140 that Sacramento’s front office, led by new general manager Scott Perry, values Westbrook but is also aware of the crowded guard rotation.
The Kings missed the 2025 postseason after a late-season collapse and are under pressure to retool the roster. Adding Westbrook would provide a proven veteran presence, but it could also complicate minutes distribution among guards.
As of now, Sacramento appears to be Westbrook’s only path back to the NBA. Whether that interest turns into a deal will depend on how the Kings finalize their offseason strategy.
