Cam Whitmore is embracing his Washington Wizards opportunity with confidence and focus.

The 21-year-old forward, recently traded from the Houston Rockets, returned to Maryland over the weekend to host the Flexwork Youth Basketball Camp at Archbishop Spalding High School, where he once starred as a prep standout.

While giving back to local youth, Whitmore also opened up about his transition to Washington and his mindset entering his third NBA season.

“I’m really trying to win some games,” Whitmore told Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson in a one-on-one interview. “I want to turn this whole organization around into a positive organization where fans will want to come to the games and fans will want to watch the Wizards play basketball.”

The former Villanova standout, drafted No. 20 overall in 2023, played 98 total games over two seasons with the Rockets, averaging 10.8 points and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 44.9% from the field and 35.7% from three.

After spending time with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the G League and getting limited playoff action, Whitmore is aiming to play a bigger role in Washington.

The move to D.C. is also personal.

A native of Odenton, Maryland, Whitmore recalled watching John Wall and Bradley Beal during Wizards playoff runs, including Paul Pierce’s iconic game-winner in 2015. Now, he finds himself on the same floor representing the same franchise he once rooted for.

“I’m here a couple years later, so it’s kinda a surreal moment,” he said.

The Wizards are in the early stages of a rebuild, with a young core that includes rookies Bub Carrington and Alex Sarr, along with second-year forward Bilal Coulibaly. Whitmore sees the group as eager and aligned.

“Just a couple of young guns ready to work,” he said. “We’re very hungry to win basketball games.”

When asked about his development, Whitmore credited Rockets coach Ime Udoka for emphasizing defense.

“You can’t get on the floor without defense,” he said. “Defense could make a big impact and you don’t even have to score the ball.”

The 6-foot-7 wing also shared support for former teammate Jalen Green, now with the Phoenix Suns, calling him “a good player and athletic player” with breakout potential.
