Washington Wizards forward Cam Whitmore will miss an indefinite period after being diagnosed with upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder, NBA insider Shams Charania reported on Tuesday. Whitmore had missed several games recently due to shoulder soreness, and further testing revealed the blood clot.

Whitmore joined the Wizards via trade this season and had been integrating into coach Brian Keefe’s development plan. Charania noted that the 21-year-old forward “had started working closely with coach Brian Keefe in recent weeks as part of his development plan.”

This season, Whitmore has appeared in 21 games but has yet to start, averaging 16.9 minutes and 9.2 points per game. He has also contributed 2.8 rebounds and 0.7 assists per contest, providing depth for a Wizards squad struggling at 5-23.

The news adds to a growing list of NBA players affected by DVT in recent years. Victor Wembanyama was diagnosed with a similar upper-extremity clot in February 2025, sidelining him for the remainder of the 2024–25 season before he underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. Damian Lillard also faced a DVT in his right calf in March 2025, missing the final month of the regular season.

While treatment usually includes blood-thinning medication and close monitoring, recovery timelines can vary, especially for high-intensity players. Whitmore’s situation will likely be evaluated continuously to determine a safe return to basketball activity.
