Washington Wizards forward Cam Whitmore has been shut down for the remainder of the season after being diagnosed with a blood clotting issue.
The team has indicated that Whitmore has already started treatment and that doctors expect him to make a full recovery, easing long-term concerns despite the abrupt end to his year.
With Whitmore officially ruled out, Washington has moved to apply for a Disabled Player Exception.
If the league approves the request, as is widely anticipated, the Wizards would receive roughly $1.7 million in spending flexibility, representing half of Whitmore’s salary for the season.
That exception could be used to add a replacement player on a rest-of-season deal without any future options attached.
Whitmore’s rookie campaign in Washington was limited but productive.
Appearing in 21 games, the 6-foot-6 forward averaged 9.2 points per contest while shooting efficiently, carving out a role off the bench in just under 17 minutes per game.
Although his season has ended early, Whitmore remains part of the team’s longer-term plans, with his contract set to pay $5.5 million next season as he continues his recovery and development.
