Jakob Poeltl and the Toronto Raptors have agreed on a four-year contract extension worth $104 million, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. The deal will keep the center with the franchise through the 2029-30 NBA season.
The agreement includes a player option for the 2026-27 season valued at $19.5 million. The Raptors and Poeltl’s agents, Michael Tellem and Sam Goldfeder from Excel Sports, explored various contract structures before settling on an opt-in-and-extend format. This approach gives Toronto flexibility over the next two seasons.
Poeltl, 29, returned to Toronto in 2023 after several years with the San Antonio Spurs. His impact on the court has been notable, as he averaged 14.5 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game during the current 2024-25 campaign. His field goal percentage remains strong, at 62.7%.
Throughout his career, Poeltl has demonstrated steady improvement. He originally joined the Raptors in 2016, showing promise as a defensive center with efficient shooting. After a productive stint in San Antonio, he returned to Toronto and has become a key piece of the team’s core.
This extension signals Toronto’s commitment to Poeltl as a foundational player despite the franchise’s challenging 30-52 record this season. The Raptors finished 11th in the Eastern Conference and missed the playoffs. Still, management appears confident in Poeltl’s role in the team’s rebuilding process.
