The New Orleans Pelicans announced the suspension of star forward Zion Williamson for one game, citing his failure to meet team standards. According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Williamson was late for multiple practices and missed the team flight to Philadelphia, which led to the disciplinary action.
Despite missing Williamson and defensive anchor Herb Jones, the Pelicans pulled off a 123-115 victory over the 76ers, improving their record to 8-31. CJ McCollum carried the offensive load with 38 points, helping New Orleans snap a two-game losing streak.
Philadelphia was also shorthanded, with Joel Embiid sitting out his third consecutive game due to a sprained left foot. Without Embiid, the 76ers fell to 15-21 overall and 8-15 in games he has missed this season.
McCollum displayed his scoring prowess, shooting 13-for-24 from the field and hitting six three-pointers. His offensive outburst was complemented by Jordan Hawkins, who added 21 points and sank five three-pointers. Dejounte Murray recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Jose Alvarado chipped in 13 points and nine assists off the bench.
Tyrese Maxey led the way for the 76ers with a stellar 30-point, 12-assist performance. Paul George contributed 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 21 points. However, Philadelphia struggled defensively, allowing New Orleans to convert 45% of their three-point attempts.
The Pelicans bench proved critical in the victory, with Brandon Boston Jr. and Daniel Theis combining for 23 points. Their contributions helped offset the absence of Williamson, whose suspension highlighted a challenging season for New Orleans.
