The Sixers assert that they conducted a thorough evaluation process before committing to Joel Embiid with a three-year max extension in September, according to Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports.

An ESPN report revealed that the team and Embiid sought opinions from as many as six medical experts regarding his long-term health before the agreement.

Neubeck adds that a group of 5-7 doctors conducted comprehensive tests and evaluations on Embiid’s left knee during three crucial stages: following his injury in January, ahead of his late-season return, and again in the lead-up to the extension being finalized.

These evaluations presented a range of possible outcomes, but the consensus among doctors was generally optimistic that Embiid’s knee issues could be effectively managed.

Despite this, the Sixers were surprised when Embiid missed the season opener and several additional games to continue rehabilitation and conditioning.

This has highlighted the inherent challenges of monitoring Embiid’s status, as only he can fully assess how his knee feels daily. The lingering discomfort has reportedly taken a mental toll on the reigning MVP, adding complexity to his recovery process.

Head coach Nick Nurse indicated that Embiid could return to action for Friday’s game against Orlando, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Embiid, who has appeared in just four games this season, remains a focal point for a team balancing his long-term health with their immediate aspirations.

The Sixers are eager to have their franchise centerpiece back on the court but remain cautious as they navigate his recovery and workload management.
