The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly targeting center Jonas Valanciunas in a trade, despite missing out on him during the offseason when he signed with the Washington Wizards.
According to NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Lakers are looking to offer Gabe Vincent and second-round picks to acquire the Lithuanian big man.
Valanciunas, 32, has been a solid contributor for the Wizards this season. In 20 minutes per game, he is averaging 12 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists.
His steady play in the paint has made him a valuable asset, but with Washington’s rebuilding effort underway, they are expected to move veteran players like Valanciunas before the trade deadline.
The Lakers, currently sitting ninth in the Western Conference with a 12-9 record, are looking to add depth to their frontcourt. While Valanciunas would bring experience and rebounding ability, the Lakers have faced challenges finding consistency in their lineup this season.
Vincent, who the Lakers signed to a three-year, $33 million deal, has struggled to make an impact. Averaging just 3.2 points and 1 rebound in 17.7 minutes per game, Vincent has been a disappointment, with injuries and inefficient shooting limiting his contributions. This has led the Lakers to consider including him as a salary filler in trade talks.
The Lakers’ interest in Valanciunas comes at a time when the Wizards are in full rebuilding mode. With the worst record in the NBA at 2-17, the Wizards are expected to focus on developing younger players, making their veteran assets like Valanciunas prime trade candidates.
