Jaden McDaniels has secured another $40 million in guaranteed money from the Minnesota Timberwolves while preserving the flexibility to negotiate a new extension in 2028 or enter free agency in 2030.

According to Shams Charania, the All-Defense forward agreed to a one-year, $40 million extension on Monday, October 19, keeping him under contract through the 2029-30 season.

The contract structure is the key detail: McDaniels adds one guaranteed season without committing to a longer-term deal at this stage.

McDaniels’ agents, Nima Namakian of Innovate Sports and Bill Duffy of WME Basketball, confirmed the agreement to ESPN, Charania reported. The arrangement also gives McDaniels the option of pursuing another extension as early as 2028, potentially starting at up to 140% of his new $40 million salary, or becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2030.

The 26-year-old is coming off his most productive NBA season. He averaged career highs of 14.8 points and 2.7 assists, along with 4.2 rebounds, in 73 games during the 2025-26 campaign. McDaniels shot 51.5% from the field and 41.2% from three-point range while playing 31.7 minutes per game.

A key defensive presence in Minnesota, McDaniels earned All-Defensive Second Team honors in 2024. He has spent his entire six-year NBA career with the Timberwolves, averaging 11.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists across 439 regular-season appearances.

Minnesota finished 52-30 last season and reached the Western Conference smifinals before losing to the San Antonio Spurs. The Timberwolves reshaped their roster during the offseason, acquiring LaMelo Ball from Charlotte to pair with Anthony Edwards and adding Jonathan Kuminga.

McDaniels’ new deal keeps an established two-way contributor in place as Minnesota builds around Edwards and Ball, while leaving the forward with another opportunity to negotiate a longer-term contract in 2028.
